Over the last six years, the Helena Public Schools elementary transportation budget has increased from $2,821,798 to $3,800,000.
A new contract with First Student, Inc., changing transportation regulations and a population shifting to the Helena Valley all factor into the rising cost.
Regulations and contract increases are unavoidable, but inadequate facilities can be upgraded.
“Until we fix our school problem we’re probably going to see a continued increase,” Tom Cohn, transportation contract manager with the district, said.
